Project Description

1978 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40

This 1978 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 has seen many choice upgrades, making it a dependable and comfortable daily driver. It’s had the desirable 350 swap, and better still it’s mated to a Toyota five-speed manual transmission. The engine & transmission swap are mated together properly through an Advanced Adapter Kit. The 350 cubic inch V8 motor is running throttle-body injection, electronic ignition, a serpentine belt setup and a heavy-duty aluminum radiator with electric cooling fan. It starts and runs beautifully and makes great power – and with the five speed, you can comfortably cruise at highway speeds. Mileage on the chassis is unknown, but the engine, clutch and transmission only have 13,300 miles on them. In addition, the transfer case was rebuilt about 2,000 miles ago.

This FJ40 offers the best of both worlds — unmatched off-road capabilities while still retaining decent on-road manners thanks to power steering and power disc brakes upfront. It’s running BF Goodrich 35×10.50 mud terrain tires with a matching spare.

The front bumper is fitted with Hella driving lights, a Mile Marker 8,000 Lb. winch and a hi-lift jack. The FJ has a custom rear bumper to support the 35″ spare, plus additional storage for jerry cans or fishing, hunting or camping supplies. Paint is decent driver quality and comes to a shine after wash and wax. Body does have a few areas of surface rust; photos included. Hood front has the typical problem of the FJ but is in very manageable/repairable condition; photos included. All glass is good. Frame and floor-pans are solid with no rust. The FJ40 has a great look overall.

The interior is in original driver condition, floors are rhino lined, door panels showing minor wear, seat upholstery showing minor wear on passenger side but the driver side seat has rips and must be reupholstered, the rest of the interior is consistent with age. However, a locking Tuffy center console, a modern AM/FM/CD stereo and all new gauge cluster have been added. A full roll cage with three-point front seat belts is also installed.

Clear and clean Virginia title in hand.
